About Us
Who are we?
The Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society was created in the late nineteenth century when its principal objective was the organisation of the Annual Agricultural Show. The Society has come a long way since those early days and today continues to oversee the maintenance and use of the County Showground for the purpose of staging not only the County Show, one of the oldest shows in the country but many other entertainment, cultural and fundraising events.

The Queen visited the County Show in May 1975 and opened the Presidents Pavilion.
History
The Shropshire County Agricultural Show was created in the late nineteenth century when it was launched as part of the co-operative venture- The Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society.
Did You Know?
Records show that in 1875 visitors were treated to four sheds of sheep, two housing pigs, a cattle ring, more than 40 horse boxes, a large tent for wool, butter and cheese, and two refreshment areas - one for first-class visitors, and one for second.

The Agricultural Society
Formed to preside over the joint West Midland District event and arrange a show that would feature the agriculture, poultry, and horticultural exhibits.
A Showground
Regular events hosted at the Showground include the Shropshire County Show, Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Shrewsbury Live and the November Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular.
A Campsite
The idea of a campsite was born to help the Society recover from severe floods that saw the cancellation of many events and severely impacted the Society financially.
Charity Shops
The Society now runs five charity shops in Shrewsbury, Wem, Church Stretton, Ellesmere and Oswestry which boosts income and raises funds for good causes.
The Rural Charity
An arm of the society supporting our rural community - from donating gardening equipment to a Scouting group to sponsoring and supporting Shropshire Young Farmers.
Car Boot Sales
The weekly car boot sales on our large site are extremely popular with both sellers and buyers and any items not sold can be taken to our charity shops.
Business Sponsorship
Our showground and the events we host receive incredible support from the local business community for which we are very grateful.
Community Support
The Agricultural Society works closely with the local community, supporting them in any way they can with the showground and its facilities.
